I get asked a very specific question…a lot.
“What do you mean when you say someone is gross?”
Apparently, I use the term ‘gross’ a lot, and I never realized it. I say it on my Instagram stories. I say it in real life. I call people ‘gross people’ all the time, and I had no idea. However, it’s not a vague term. It’s a very specific term, so I thought I’d share what I consider a gross person.
It’s a character assessment. It is not an adjective for anyone’s appearance, personal hygiene, etc. It’s literally all character based, and I’m really excited to share this!
So…what makes someone gross to me?
Over-explainers
No one cares. Just give your answer and move on. No one needs to know the gory details, no one needs to know why. Honestly, no one even cares that much. Okay, here’s a good example of things I see all the time that just come off as gross to me – people on social media who feel the overwhelming need to explain everything. Just…don’t. Just tell people you’re getting a divorce and move on. We don’t need to know that he emotionally abused you or that things just changed after his accident, or that you did your best and you are perfect and he is not. Especially if this is your third divorce. Darling, we all know you just have bad taste.
People in everyone’s business.
Because why do you care about every single person you’ve ever met in life? If you don’t live in your hometown, why do you care about everyone’s business in your hometown? If you don’t like drama, why do you insert yourself in the middle of everyone’s all the time? Gross.
People who don’t take accountability for their actions.
No one is perfect. You make mistakes, too. So when you try to tell us all that you did nothing wrong and it’s every single other person’s fault, no one believes you. Just hold yourself accountable.
Parents who think their kids are perfect.
Oh my God they are not perfect. Far from it. I love my kids more than life itself, but I don’t for one hot second believe they are perfect angels who would never do anything wrong. I don’t think everything they do is better than everything everyone else’s kids do. It’s a gross mindset because it’s teaching them that they’re faultless and perfect, and they’re just going to grow up to be insufferable adults.
Rude people.
It’s unnecessary to be rude. Always.
Toxic happiness and toxic positivity.
I love happy people. I love positive people. I do. They are genuinely the best. But, for the love of everything holy, stop it with the toxic everything. Being aggressively committed to pretending everything is perfect and wonderful all the time has got to exhaust you guys. Listen, I’m all for finding the silver lining in your divorce, or your midlife crisis, or whatever you’re going through, but oh my.
Vague-bookers.
You know the ones. “I’m going through something, send prayers,” and then “please respect my privacy at this time,” while simultaneously responding vaguely to everyone who comments. We all see you looking for attention. However, I’m going to say this…I do laugh when people comment and say, “What’s going on?” and these people say, “Send me a DM!”
I actually equate these people to being the same as the ‘I’m taking a social media break, guys, so don’t panic if you can’t reach me,’ like no one is panicking. No one is even paying that much attention. Gross.
People who need everyone to know they’re a good person.
Not everyone is going to think you’re a good person, so stop trying on all the personalities to make sure everyone likes you. How about focusing on just being yourself and liking yourself and not worrying if other people don’t like you.
Internet arguing.
If you’re fighting with people on the internet, I’ll give you my therapist’s number because you probably need it. Guys, it’s not that serious. It’s not a big deal. Who cares if Matt from Montana leaves a negative comment on your post? Ignore it or delete you. You do not have to engage. Actually, where are you finding the time to have full on arguments with people on the internet about things that don’t even matter?
People who confuse boundaries with punishment.
Ya’ll have got to stop taking boundaries personally. They’re not about you. They’re about the person setting them. If you don’t like someone’s boundaries, I’m going to share some breaking news with you: You might actually be the reason that boundary was set.
People incapable of being happy for other people.
It’s just gross when you cannot be happy for others and their success and achievements and accomplishments. What is someone else’s good news taking from your life? What is their good news doing to your life? Nothing. Just be happy for them. When you’re not happy for others, it tells me you’re probably bitter, envious, and unhappy with yourself. So, why not take those feelings, utilize them, and do more rather than being an asshole about it?
Blamers.
You are responsible for your actions, reactions, and choices. No one else. Stop blaming the world for your misfortune and poor choices. It’s gross.
Okay, I think that about covers it. I’d love to hear your idea of what makes people gross. Actually, I think I’m going to follow this one up with the things that I think make people absolutely fucking phenomenal.
